Safety tips for riders, horses and barns
· Taking a fewsimple precautionary steps can prevent many accidents.your barn will runmore efficiently and it will make your riding more enjoyable. I hope youfind these ideas useful. · Do not permit smokingin barns and surrounding areas. Post no smoking signs in your barns. · Keep smoke detectorsin your barns. Check these at least once a year. · Keep fire extinguishersin convenient places in all buildings. · Post lists of emergencytelephone #'s by phones or in clearly visible locations. (Vet, Fire Dept.,etc.) · In case of an accident,notify your insurance company a.s.a.p. (This number is listed on your insurancepolicy) · Always wear a helmetwhen mounted and wear proper riding attire. (This means boots, not sneakers,etc.) Post notices at your farm so others do the same. Make this a habitand set a good example. · Notify people ofyour plans before you go out riding, especially trail rides or when ridingalone. · If possible, keepa cellular phone with you when riding or when trailering your horse. Theseare excellent in emergency situations. · Keep barns cleanand uncluttered. Aisleways should be clear of equipment. (Wheelbarrows,rakes, tractors, etc.) This prevents injury to horse and rider. · Periodically checkfencing for loose or broken boards, posts or rails. It will prevent horsesfrom escaping and possibly becoming injured. · Keep all gates closed.Post signs so that others remember to close your gates. · As you can see,posting notices in barns keeps safety practices uniform. Everybody willbe reminded to be aware of the rules, those familiar with barn proceduresas well as newcomers. · If you take a coupleof minutes to do some routine checks, you can make for a safer environmentfor all. · Try to prevent accidentsbefore they happen.
