WILL MY PERSONAL INSURANCE COVER MY COMMERCIAL OR BUSINESS EXPOSURES?
This is a message to all the back yard boarders and the people who house horses. You are taking a chance if you board horses on your home property without first checking to see if your homeowner company will allow outside boarders and in what number will you be covered. Every company has their own rules about this. Some allow up to two, some up to 4 or 6 and some allow NOTHING! The homeowner liability for your own horses might only be at home or in the neighborhood and NOT at a show or in the park or trail. Don't think that because you do this for a friend or relative that does not live with you for no compensation that it is NOT COMMERICAL. The exchange of money is not necessary. This might also put the barn out of the personal realm too.
This exclusion could extend to your personal umbrella as well. It is best to check with your Insurance Agent or company for clarification. When it comes to a claim...DON'T ASSUME ANYTHING!
The best time to review is NOW. That goes for the boarder as well as the stable provider. If coverage is denied by a company for the provider the damages could well come back to haunt the boarder.
If your homeowner policy won't cover your exposure, inexpensive alternatives are available. Check with your Agent or a specialty company.
