We all trailer other peoples horses at one time or another. Sometimes it is a friendly thing and no charge is involved. That is covered under your auto or personal liability (the liability portion) but what happens if the horse is hurt or worse?

Even if no money changes hands you can protect yourself with a care, custody and control policy. The basic costs are $200 to $300 per year and if you do it often enough you might just want to consider that kind of coverage.

The for hire or commercial shipper needs quite different and more complex coverages. They include truckers commercial auto liability, cargo and physical damage on their vehicle if new enough or if a bank is financing it. Sometimes ICC or interstate filings are needed as well.

We all know how expensive it is to get trailered to the shows and if you go to enough of them it pays to buy your own trailer. Problem is that with only one horse, there is that empty space that could be paying for the cost of the trailer or if you don't go to a particular show (very true in Summer) you might want to trailer two non-owned horses.

The cost for Care, Custody and Control is not as bad as one might think and protects you for the animal being transported if it is injured or has to be put down as a result of an accident with your trailer. This coverage is also good for the horse left for an overnight at your place even if you don't board horses on a regular basis. The bottom line coverage is $5000 per horse and includes transport. The cost is $200 to $300 per year payable in 4 installments.

The premium could be higher based upon the values of the horses you trailer and the number of miles you travel for the year.
