HOW IMPORTANT IS FENCING?
In the first case, one of the questions on a care, custody and control policy (bailee policy) is who is responsible for the fencing and what type is it. Who maintains it. Fence posts that are rotting or poorly maintained fencing can void coverage and make an insured pretty unhappy when the company denies a claim. A horse knocking down a well maintained fence or breaking through, is an accidental incident but a poorly maintained fence is not. You can liken it to a roof where water gets under and is never fixed causing rot and damage. This is NOT covered on your homeowner policy.
In the second case, fencing is a private or appurtenant structure and may not be covered unless specifically insured EXCEPT where it is attached to a barn or house and then becomes part of that building. Most of us have at some point a fence or gate attached to the barn or house on a farm policy. If not, it is a good idea to check with your agent to make sure your fence or even your swimming pool is covered.
