One of the issues confronting horse people is horse health coverage. You know it best as Major Medical coverage and surgical. Just like people, we pay for the coverage and hope we never have to use it. But, if you do need it it's good to know it's there.

Major medical can only be purchased in conjunction with full mortality coverage. It covers a full range of care with a deductible of $200. What is not covered is more important. Any charges after the limit of $5,OOO accident or illness prior to the policy and recurrence are not covered. Farm calls or travel or animal transportation are not covered (although one company gives these free if for emergency colic.) Voluntary surgery... caslick, gelding, any cosmetic surgery, willful injury whether caused by the insured or not, any normal treatment (shots, worming and the like) racing stock, no after care except when surgery is performed (limit is 50% of surgery cost limited to 15 days) any congenital condition (e.g. umbilical hernia, contracted tendons etc.) any animal under 30 days or over 15 years (varies with company) ...all are not covered.

Even if you think your horse is well and sound and could never be ill, he could have an accident. Vet care is very expensive and it is a good idea to at least know our options.
