FIRE, YOUR HORSE'S WORST ENEMY

A few simple rules are always important for the horse owner or professional.

1. Make sure that everything is secure in your barn before you leave it.

No safety check is this important!

2. Absolutely no smoking in the barn...put up signs!

3. Hay should be kept in a separate place if possible. If not, a fire wall can be made out of sheet metal or fire proof wall board.

4. Get an intercom for babies. Put one in the barn and one in the horse.

5. Get smoke detectors and put one every two to three stalls.

6. Check on your horses as frequently as possible.

7. Any unusual sounds should be investigated. Horses can get caste in the stall or get hurt or sick. Better safe than sorry.

Just a note to the back yard people. Even if you don't take any money for boarding, YOU ARE A COMMERCIAL VENTURE if you board horses. You can still protect yourself for the value of horses in your care, custody and control. Cost is nominal, starting at $105.00 for a year for $5,000 per horse coverage up to $25,000 per occurrence. Higher values are available.

For the pleasure horse owner, the cost of insuring a $3,000 horse up to age fourteen is $150 (the minimum premium) for one year with four payments. The actual rate is 3% of value, but policies have a minimum. The premium includes emergency colic treatment of up to $5,000 or 1/2 the value of the horse.
