BACK YARD BOARDING...ARE YOU COVERED?
With rare exception, insurance carriers look upon a boarder as a commercial venture. It requires coverages that must be obtained on a special Farmowners policy. This protects your liability against law suits by a boarder or any person should the horse get out and cause damage to someone else's property or person. Anyone who has had their own "escape" knows that damage can be done to a neighbor's lawn. How about $100.00 per hoof print! Remember that liability has NO deductible attached. Your own horses are also covered in this form.
Another coverage that people rarely think about (in connection with boarding) is Bailee legal - Care, Custody and Control. This will cover your liability should something happen to the actual horse being boarded and it also covers transport of the horse should you use your trailer to go to a show or for a ride in the park. These coverages are minimal in cost and are payable in quarterly installments. All policies are billed directly by the companies and can be purchased as a package or separately depending on the nature of your operation.
Remember...a farmowners policy can replace a homeowners policy with all the same basics and frills. The only difference is that now you have a FARM BUSINESS EXPENSE. Consult your accountant about out the advantages of having a farm side line business.
If you have any question in your mind that you don't have the right coverage ---- YOU PROBABLY DON'T.
